Canada Day Update

Where you can find us (and where you can't)

Upcoming Events

The cover of the picture book Wait Like a Seed by Erin Alladin and Tara Anderson shows a white-skinned, little girl with blonde pigtails and a blue dress blowing milkweed seeds into a yellow sky.

In the episode we tried and failed to record this week (more on that below), we gave a shout-out to public libraries that no one will ever hear ☹️ But you, dear newsletter reader, get the intel that goes with that shout-out: sometimes you can catch us doing presentations at public libraries. This summer, Erin has two kids’ presentations scheduled in which she’ll read Wait Like a Seed and share tons of knowledge about milkweed, monarchs, and other pollinators.

  • July 8 at 1:30 pm, McKellar, Ontario Public Library (includes flower planting in the community centre’s pollinator garden!)

  • August 16 at 1:00 pm, Waubaushene, Ontario branch of the Tay Township Public Library

The Tragedy of Cottage-Country Internet

As you’ll know if you’re a patron of the Seedling tier or higher, this week’s pre-show suffered from some serious lag. Shortly after that stream, we launched into a recording for a special Canada Day plant face-off…and found ourselves booted out of the online studio over and over again. Our area’s population swells massively during cottager season, and this was the busiest Canada Day weekend we’ve seen in years. The internet just couldn’t handle it.

With that being the case, we decided to allow ourselves to enjoy the holiday. If you’d like to catch up on some great Canadian interviews from the podcast’s early episodes, here are our recommendations:

Episode 3, Garden Education with the CBC's garden correspondent Paul Zammit

Episode 7, Winter Sowing with Amanda Jewell, a home gardener with a knack for germinating native plants

Episode 9, Garden Classrooms with Lauren MacLean, a BC teacher and outdoor-education author:

Happy Canada Day!
